Editorial Reviews

Gustafer Yellowgold is the anti-Barney, capturing winsome moments that are both pretty and a little wistful, rather than toothache sweet. Morgan Taylor supplies the songs for Gustafer and his friends on this ten-track CD plus DVD (Taylor's animated videos feature lyrics at the bottom of the screen for easy sing-alongs). Gustafer sings about his pet eel, Slim ("Your Eel," featuring a surprisingly vibrant electric guitar solo), his pterodactyl friend Forrest Applecrumbie ("Pterodactyl Tuxedo"), and the "Mint Green Bee," who makes super-sweet tea and likes to sing, too. Musically, Taylor reveals a kinship with contemporary psych-pop bands such as the Flaming Lips and the Polyphonic Spree and a marked fondness for the Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles, with pared-down arrangements anchored by acoustic guitars, handclaps, and light brass and string arrangements. Where other contemporary purveyors of hip kids' music, such as They Might Be Giants or Dan Zanes, tend toward peppy, dance-inciting ditties, Gustafer sounds more at home with reflective ballads that engage kids' hearts and feelings as much as their feet. Think of childhood favorites such as The Little Prince or Charlotte's Web, and you have an idea of the richness of Gustafer's Wide Wild World -- and the staying power of these songs. Lydia Vanderloo

November 17, 2007: My son is 18 months and he loves this. He doesn't watch any other tv or videos but when we put gustafer on he climbs on the couch and is mesmerized. I love how the music is fun and yet not annoying, and the videos are cute without being too flashy. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to get their child more interested in music but does not want "the wheels on the bus..." stuck in their heads all day!! This is one you won't mind listening to a few times in a row.

July 10, 2007: This is the one kids cd that I actually listen to when my kid is not around. Yes. I mean it. Totally. It's that good. In a world where most kids dvds are frenetic headache-inducing garbage, this is mellow and cool - funky but not pretentious. Best songs: Eel, Rocket Shoes, Pteredactyl Tuxedo.
