MST3K was something like The Muppet Show with teeth and dangerously loose electrical wiring: It dared to go where even low-culture maven Joe Bob Briggs did not as it savaged Grade B films in real time. In the show�s "not-too-distant future," everyslob Joel Hodgson is imprisoned in space by evil scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester and sidekick TV�s Frank and forced to watch stinker movies. To deal with these terrible flicks, Joel constructs wise-cracking "robot pals" Crow and Tom Servo who assist him in tossing ad-libs at the mangy plotlines from the bottom of the screen. The show was a Comedy Central staple for seven seasons and had a three-season afterlife on the Sci-Fi Channel. This premiere box set release plumbs the CC vaults with a classic Joel episode that throws sand on the beachwreck Catalina Caper. Mike and the �bots gamely tackle Bloodlust, featuring a pre-Brady Bunch Robert Reed; The Creeping Terror, about a giant slug that feasts on canoodling couples; and The Skydivers, a romantic rondelay of clueless parachutists that inspires Crow to crack, "Which way is the sky?" January 17, 2008: This is one of my favorite MST3K volumes. Bloodlust is def a classic and also somewhat entertaining on its own due to a twisted plot. Creeping terror is my fav in this collection because of the right on commentary. Skydivers wasnt MST3K best hit for me but still worth seeing. Catalina Caper will have you VERY confused "more so than usual with these bad movies", I actually watched it about 3 times in a week so make sense of it all. Overall, a must have collection.

"In the not too distant future..." evil scientists Dr. Clayton Forrester and Frank conduct an experiment by sending unsuspecting victim Joel into orbit on a spaceship, aka "The Satellite of Love." Beguiled from any sort of entertainment, Joel Hodgson, show creator) has no choice but to watch the worst movies the scientists can find. With time on his hands, he builds companions out of parts on the ship - robots named Crow, Tom Servo, Gypsy, and Cam-Bot (who films the show). Through the miserable screenings, Crow and Tom keep Joel company, and survive by adding their own dialogue and cynical commentary. Thus, the MST 3K viewing audience avoids the perilous experience of the bad films, delights in an hysterically dense soundtrack, and relishes the moments when the silhouetted figures of Joel and the 'bots play camera tricks by interacting with the images on the screen in front of them. Every flaw in B-moviemaking is brought to light - right down glitches in sound and bad prints - with emphasis on plot structure, screenwriting, and performance (or, more appropriately, the lack thereof). Intermittently (to allow for commercials when the show appeared on the Sci-Fi Channel), Cam-Bot provides a break from the film viewing with sketches by Joel and the 'bots continuing the movie-mocking, television screen interactions with the evil scientists including the ritual "invention exchange," and other low-budget preposterousness. Later seasons brought episodes that replaced Joel with Mike Nelson (program writer) on the spaceship, and incorporated other characters, spacecraft, monkeys, and more into the repertoire - all the while maintaining the film-feigning premise of the original program.
