Editorial Reviews

The modern comedy classic Groundhog Day stars Bill Murray as a rude, temperamental television weatherman on assignment in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the town's quaint Groundhog Day festivities. When an unexpected blizzard forces him to spend the night in a local hotel, Murray awakens to find that some unexplained, supernatural powers have sentenced him to re-live the same day over and over again -- until something inside him changes for the better. Fueled by cleverly appropriated themes from various Christmas classics, Groundhog's simplicity is its strength. Writer/director Harold Ramis shows a deft hand, gracefully orchestrating a story that might otherwise have dissolved into maddening repetition. The script is subtle, consistently funny and true to it's own strange logic. And Bill Murray brings a sharp comic edge to what is essentially a sweet tale of personal redemption, made all the sweeter by the grace of Andie McDowell as the woman worth waiting an eternity for. September 10, 2008: This movie is great. I love watching Phil Connors get more and more frustrated and despondent as each day starts over again. His scenes with Ned Ryerson (BING!) are hilarious. What to watch out for

  • Sex:

Bill Murray's character seduces women, with plenty of pick-up lines and kissing on the couch and (clothed) in bed shown. A joke about how someone sounds when she gets "really excited."

  • Violence:

Phil attempts suicide in a number of ways -- electrocution, jumping off buildings, and diving off a cliff in a truck. He keeps coming back to the same day, though. Sad death of a homeless man that Phil tries to revive more than once and tak... More

What Parents Need to Know

About Groundhog Day

Parents need to know that this lighthearted comedy also deals with depression, and Phil undertakes a series of suicide attempts. Phil also womanizes. Phil learns to be a better person by the end of the movie.

Families Can Talk About

Families can talk about other movies that play with time, such as It's a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol. What is appealing about this idea?
