Editorial Reviews

Despite the 1969 cancellation that launched a thousand conventions, the Star Trek franchise has lived long and prospered in feature films and spin-off series. This 1973 Saturday morning staple, which ran for two seasons, is an overlooked part of the Star Trek universe; and whether you're a Trekkie or not, it's well worth a look. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was hands-on, and painstaking efforts were made to honor the live-action series. Most of the original cast signed on to lend their voices, including William Shatner as Kirk; Leonard Nimoy as Spock; DeForest Kelley as Bones; James Doohan as Scotty; George Takei as Sulu; and Nichelle Nichols as Uhura. Budgetary restraints reportedly excluded Walter Koenig as Chekov, but he did contribute a script for the episode, "The Infinite Vulcan." Old Star Trek hands and other notable science fiction writers also contributed scripts. D. C. Fontana (whose estimable Star Trek credits include "Journey to Babel") wrote the benchmark episode, "Yesteryear," in which Spock must return to the past through the portal from the Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" to restore his future. David Gerrold, who wrote one of the original series' quirkiest episodes, "The Trouble with Tribbles," penned the sequel, "More Tribbles, More Troubles," featuring "general nuisance" Cyrano Jones and his new menagerie of genetically engineered pests. Debate continues among fans over whether this series should be considered "canon" (an official part of Star Trek lore) or not. Whatever. But as an accompanying booklet states, this series "actively adds to our knowledge of the Trek universe and the lives of the characters to which we have become so attached." In the episode, "Bem" (misidentified in the booklet as "The Eye of the Beholder"), it is revealed that Kirk's middle name is Tiberius, and the "The Practical Joker," features the first appearance of a holodeck on the Enterprise. The animation, limited though it may be, does allow this series to boldly go where its live-action predecessor could not, particularly in the area of fantastic alien creatures and landscapes. "Yesteryear" offers the first-ever look at Spock's home world. As a nostalgic blast from the past for old-time Trekkies or as a vital bridge between the live-action series for the next generation, this is a set that Star Trek fans will want to beam up. June 15, 2007: At least it should be. This long-forgotten series features excellent writing, solid acting, above-average animation, and even stranger new worlds. The show has an advantage over the live action series, since the animation allows much more latitude. The new navigator (Chekov’s replacement) is of a three-armed species, one episode takes place mostly underwater, another episode features plant people, and the crew has to deal with zero gravity on a number of occasions. The writing is just as good as in the original series, and since each episode is only a half hour long, there’s very little filler, which some of the episodes from the other series suffer from. The series also benefits from having most of the original cast, including the original guest stars back to voice Harry Mudd, Cyrano Jones, and Sarak. The DVD set includes all 22 episodes, an episode booklet, and a “Making of the Animated series” featurette.
