Editorial Reviews

Jane Austen captures your heart again in this enchanting new PBS Masterpiece Classic adaptation by acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies (BBC's Pride and Prejudice and Bleak House). Sensible Elinor Dashwood (Hattie Morahan, (The Golden Compass) wrestles with her attraction to the unavailable Edward Ferrars (Dan Stevens), while her impulsive sister, Marianne (Charity Wakefield), falls passionately in love with an unsuitable admirer. Filmed on the breathtakingly beautiful Dorset coast, this adaptation of Sense and Sensibility aired in the U. S. in the spring of 2008 on PBS, and premiered in the U. K. on BBC1 in January of 2008. Special features include cast and crew commentaries; interviews with producer Anne Pivcevic and writer Andrew Davies; photo gallery; and Miss Austen Regrets -- based on Jane Austen's actual letters and diaries, this drama unravels the secrets of this elusive woman. The cast includes Olivia Williams, Imogen Poots, Greta Scacchi, Hugh Bonneville, Pip Torrens, Adrian Edmondson, and Phyllidia Law. From the Studio

January 21, 2010: It is my exact taste. Romance, sword fights, and fobbidden love makes it perfect.

I Also Recommend: Pride and Prejudice, Pride and Prejudice, Masterpiece Theatre's Northanger Abbey, Masterpiece: Mansfield Park, Persuasion.

BBC does it again.by simple_girl

January 17, 2010: As with all of the BBC's reproductions of Jane Austen's work, this marks the spot. Many adaptations fall short of actualizing the story and characters, but in this version of Sense and Sensibility the cast, director, and writers come very close to those points. This is by far the best film version of the book I have seen.
