    "Ballet-mad" mouseling Angelina Ballerina takes center stage in four stories from this exquisite PBS series based on the books written by Katharine Holabird and illustrated by Helen Craig. In the title story, Angelina is selected to dance the starring role of the Rose Fairy Princess. But the ballerina’s spirits dampen when she learns she will be suspended over the stage by a single wire. In "Angelina at the Fair," the darling mouse learns a lesson in responsibility when she is forced to chaperone her timid young cousin at the fair -- and he doesn't want to go on the fast and scary rides! In "Ballet Tickets," Angelina is distraught when she fails to get tickets to see her ballet heroes; but her father comes to the rescue in a fashion certain to put daddies without connections behind the eight ball. Angelina and her best friend, Alice, wrestle with their consciences in "Midnight Muddle," as Mouseland troublemaker Sammy is falsely blamed for an accident that they caused. Finty Williams is the voice of Angelina, with her real-life mother, Dame Judi Dench, as the ballet teacher Miss Lily.     September 26, 2002: Although my daughter is only 4 1/2, she must have watched this particular video 1,000,000 times! It is one of the few intelligently written ones out there with no violence or bad language and which teaches some sort of good lesson with each episode. On the whole, it is absolutely charming and yes, very British. My daughter now says, ''Oh crumbs!'' which is fine with me, and calls cotton candy ''candy floss''. All in all, I'd recommend it. The one trouble with this particular mouse, however, is that she is like a Barbie doll - she has lots of stuff which can be bought from the American Girl site - books, tapes, dolls, furniture, clothing, etc. Sigh. I guess it comes with the territory.

    September 09, 2002: If you're thinking of buying this title on DVD, think twice - you're better off recording it off the air or buying the video. I bought a copy for my daughter and on playing it, discovered that it has no Menu and no separate tracks. Basically, it works just like a video tape. Want to skip the previews? You have to fast forward. Does your child want to see a particular episode? Fast forward until you find it. I have never owned a DVD that works like this and I feel ripped off. Angelina Ballerina is a great show for kids, but don't bother buying the DVD.
