Set two years after the events of Lonesome Dove: The Series, the Canadian series Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years continues the story of Newt Call (Scott Bairstow) in the small town of Curtis Wells, Montana. In 1994-95's The Series, Call is happily married to his sweetheart, Hannah (Christianne Hirt), and living quietly in the frontier town, surrounded by friends and family. In 1995-96's The Outlaw Years, the Lonesome Dove franchise takes a darker turn. Hannah is now dead, killed in an explosion during the winter of 1878. Call was emotionally shattered by her death, and wandered the West as a bounty hunter until returning to Curtis Wells a year later to find everything changed. The town has doubled in size, rich businessman Clay Mosby (Eric McCormack) is more powerful than ever, old friends are gone, and a number of saloons and a bordello now lure the underbelly of society to the once-peaceful community. This season, Tracy Scoggins joins the cast as Amanda Carpenter, the bordello madam who turns the Lonesome Dove Hotel into her lurid place of business. Also keep an eye out for Barry Pepper (We Were Soldiers) in "Partners," and Windtalkers costar Adam Beach in "Medicine." While Bairstow makes his own the role originated by Rick Schroder in the miniseries, it's really Eric McCormack who is a wonder to watch. The Will & Grace star adds a slight Virginia lilt to his accent, allowing McCormack to prove his acting chops as the scene-stealing, backstabbing Mosby. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

September 24, 2004: This short running series seems to answer the call for some new westerns to add to my library. I miss western shows turning up on television these days. Tom Berenger had a western series that got cancelled after the first season and that season has never showed up on DVD. I was overjoyed to see Deadwood get to go for another season. I highly recommend this nice two season set to fill the void for anyone who still loves the western genre!
