Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi) was a last-minute replacement for Showtime's Rebel series and after the first viewing, his Roadracers was immediately bumped to the top of the list. This melodramatic tale of rebel youth fighting to get out of a dead-end town is often times enjoyable and disturbingly humorous but lacks the break-neck pacing of Rodriguez' other films. Sean D. December 23, 2001: If films were automobiles, this would be an early 70's mustang: simple yet powerful design, every component precision engineered, aesthetically flawless... a sterling example of everything a classic should be. David Arquette does an outstanding job under the direction of Robert Rodriguez. More emotion is conveyed through his perfectly timed silent pauses and long drags from his ciragette than could ever be imparted through even the most well acted dialog. The small cast of characters (very few extras), consistent scenery, and majority of close up shots keep us focused on exactly what it is that the director is trying to show us, and the soundtrack (mostly Link Wray) couldn't be more fitting.
