Editorial Reviews

With his trademark emphasis on character development and dialogue, writer/director John Sayles tells the story of May-Alice Culhane (Mary McDonnell), a New York soap opera actress left paralyzed by a car accident. As the film opens, she lies in a hospital bed, confused and scared, watching her own show on TV and shrieking, "That was supposed to be my closeup!" With no other options, she returns to her family's old and empty Southern home, where she drinks hard, offends every caregiver, and wallows in self-pity. Her outlook begins to changes with the arrival of Chantelle (Alfre Woodard), a nurse with her own life problems. The two gradually find a heartfelt connection with one another, and, as a result, their lives subtly change. McDonnell's work in Passion Fish earned her an Oscar nomination as Best Actress. April 25, 2003: Passion Fish tells the story of 2 women from different racial backgrounds and social class who together learn to become survivors and more importantly, become friends. May Alice, played superbly by Mary McDonnell, is a successful New York soap opera star who is hit by a car and becomes a paraplegic. Full of hopelessness and despair, she returns to her family home in Louisiana. There the sorry state of her life takes its toll on her and her self-pity and self-loathing lead her to drown her sorrows in drinking and a slovenly lifestyle. After going through several in-home caretakers, she meets Chantelle, played magnificently by Alfre Woodard. Chantelle, a former nurse with problems of her own, does not allow May Alice to continue her self-destructive habits and through “tough love” forces May Alice to become more independent. They both come to realize their need for each other – May Alice for not just a caretaker, but a companion and friend, and Chantelle because if she can prove herself as a responsible, mature individual who can hold down a job, will be able to regain custody of her daughter who is currently living with Chantelle’s father. May Alice and Chantelle’s faltering steps to building a relationship of respect, trust, and understanding plays out against the rich backdrop of Louisiana’s Cajun country. Director Sayles paints a vivid picture with a colorful cast of supporting actors, the passionate, fervent Zydeco music and dancing, Cajun food, and the great footage of the Louisiana bayou.
