    In the early years of the 22nd century, a medical rescue team is traveling the netherworlds of deep space, waiting to answer emergency calls aboard what amounts to an interstellar ambulance. Captain Marley (Robert Forster), pilot Vanzant (James Spader), medical officer Evers (Angela Bassett), medical technician Penalosa (Lou Diamond Phillips), paramedic Lund (Robin Tunney), and computer technician Sotomejor (Wilson Cruz) pick up a distress signal from a group of workers involved in a mining operation on a comet. But as they move in for a rescue, they discover that this isn't the mission of mercy they were expecting. They pick up Larson (Peter Facinelli), a mysterious and menacing man with a strange alien artifact, who draws the ship into the orbit of a huge star that is due to explode into a supernova at any time. Supernova had a production history that can be charitably described as "troubled." Australian filmmaker Geoffrey Wright was replaced by Walter Hill shortly before filming began. Actor Vincent D'Onofrio left the project shortly after Wright, replaced by Cruz. Hill then left the project in post-production and requested that his name be removed from the film.     November 11, 2009: This film had the potential to be very, very good. James Spader and Angela Bassett are both at the top of their game. Someone spent a lot of money on the sets, gizmos and special effects. The plot had potential; superintelligent aliens seed the universe with shiny objects for other unsuspecting spacefaring races to find and take home. Then BOOM, the bauble destroys the up-and-coming civilization, blowing to bits any race that may rise to challenge the scheming aliens. Crafty! And in a film genre that survives by recycling familiar plot lines, it's a refreshing idea.

    The writers also came up with a new twist on the plot point that trips up so many scifi storytellers, the incomprehensibly vast amount of time and distance involved in space travel. Using today's science, your characters would die of old age before they flew to Neptune and back. Inconvenient. Many fantastic notions have been spun from the aether to dodge this problem; warp drive, dilithium crystals (Star Trek) hyperspace (Star Wars), hypersleep (Alien). In Supernova, humans strip naked and encase themselves in sleek (rather phallic) pods to withstand an Interdimensional Jump which can have some gruesome consequences if botched. On screen it's simultaneously sexy and dangerous, the perfect formula for a scifi film.

    James Spader's body of work as an actor is patchy, but in this film he is spot on. In a genre whose nerdy dialog sometimes elicits cartoonish performances (William Shatner) Spader nails it. He looks cool and believable in the shiny, ultramodern set, amd seems completely at home in the 23rd century. Sometimes space romance can come off as corny (Han Solo and Princess Leia) but Spader's relationship with Angela Bassett is handled with skill, unlike some of the others on the ship. One suspects a suit from the studio sent a note demanding "more boobies and sex" and the director obeyed, cramming in some gratuitous boot-knocking at the last minute.

    You'd hope that all this might gel into a fun, scary, thrilling, sexy movie. Alas, someone along the line dropped the ball. Did they suddenly run out of money? Were there disputes between director and studio? I don't know, but it's a darn shame. Supernova is good, as far as it goes. It could have gone a lot further.

    March 09, 2009: Not that great. Kinda so so if that. It's not a horrible movie--but,

    don't need it in my catalog of movies. Much better similar movies are

    alien, fifth element, even some of the star trek movies.
