The TNT cable network aired this made-for-TV version of Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl in January 2004. Jeff Daniels stars as Elliot Garfield, an actor who subleases an apartment in New York City. Unfortunately, the apartment is already occupied by dancer Paula McFadden (Patricia Heaton) and her daughter, Lucy (Hallie Kate Eisenberg). Apparently, Paula's boyfriend decided to secretly sublease his part of the apartment before he left her. Paula and Elliot agree to share the apartment, even though they get on each other's nerves. While she desperately searches for a job and he struggles through a difficult production of Richard III, they end up falling in love. Eventually their love is tested when Elliot gets a job offer in Seattle. Contemporary pop artists Hootie & the Blowfish contribute to the soundtrack. Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

July 04, 2008: Remaking a classic romantic comedy is not impossible -- ''Sabrina'' and ''You've Got Mail'' are excellent examples of films that turned out as good or better than the original. Unfortunately, this straightforward remake of Neil Simon's ''The Goodbye Girl'' falls flat, largely because we've already seen it before, done far better. The highly underrated Jeff Daniels puts forward a game effort, but never really catches fire with the same sort of manic energy that made Richard Dreyfuss' performance so memorable [not to mention Oscar-worthy]. The less said about Patricia Heaton the better. I've never been a great fan of hers, and her performance here does little to improve my opinion of her. To make matters worse, there just isn't any believable spark of chemistry between the two leads. Hallie Kate Eisenberg [best remembered for her Diet Pepsi commercials from the mid-90s] makes for a good Lucy, but even she suffers from comparison to Quinn Cummings. Don't waste your time on this one, except as an object lesson in how not EVERY movie needs a remake.

July 12, 2006: I have seen both versions of The Goodbye Girl. I saw the older version that starred Marsha Mason, Richard Dreyfuss and Quinn Cummings in a movie theater when I was 11 years old and I loved that movie but I have since seen this remake that starred Patricia Heaton, Jeff Daniels and Hallie Kate Eisenberg and though the original is better I also liked this updated remake and thought Patricia Heaton was good but I felt that Jeff Daniels who is usually a superb actor looked uncomfortable and bored and that is my only complaint!
