    Produced for the Sci-Fi Channel, this twisted variation on L. Frank Baum's classic tale follows a young girl named D.G. and her newfound friends as they embark on a wondrous adventure through the Outer Zone (O.Z.) on a mission to locate a powerful wizard known as the Mystic Man, and break the spell of the wicked sorceress Azkadellia. An ordinary girl suddenly thrust into an extraordinary world, D.G. (Zooey Deschanel) arrives on the Outer Zone prepared to follow the fabled Old Road and fulfill her destiny. When D.G. discovers that the evil Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson) has cast an oppressive spell over the Outer Zone, she enlists the aid of half-brained eccentric Glitch (Alan Cumming), kindly-but-cowardly beast Raw (Raoul Trujillo), and heartbroken former lawman Cain (Neal McDonough) in seeking out the wisdom of the fabled Mystic Man (Richard Dreyfuss) who lives at the end of the Old Road. With the future of the Outer Zone hanging in the balance, this adventurous group ventures down a perilous road that will find them doing battle with nightmarish flying monkey bats and Azkadellia's malevolent henchmen as they attempt to break a spell with the power to destroy them all.     June 08, 2009: These days it's hard to find a movie that can be enjoyed by all ages. I'm glad to say Tin Man is one of them. It's got action, adventure, comedy, fantasy elements, sci-fi elements, and wonderful characters.

    Tin Man is a retailing of The Wizard of Oz (dangerous territory to wander into). The Wizard of Oz is so loved and has been redone so many times it would be hard to come up with a totally fresh perspective on things. This is where the success of Tin Man is found. It is a creative spin on the familiar story and characters but at the same time can easily be seen as its own independent thing.

    The story centers around 20-year-old DG. A girl who has grown up in Kansas and is bored and unimpressed with her life there. When a freak storm (yes, a tornado) sweeps her and her parents up and over to the other side she wakes to find herself in the O.Z. (the Outer Zone). Now she must find her parents but things aren't going to be easy. The O.Z. is run by a cruel and power sorceress who controls the Outer Zone with an iron fist. To make it through her journey in one piece, she is going to need some help. Along the way she finds 3 companions--all of which are less than ideal travel partners. Raw, a cowardly half-man half-lion creature called a Viewer; who's psychic power is crippelled by his great fear. Glitch, a man who has literally had his brain removed. He is either a criminal justly punished or simply someone who was too smart for his own good. Even he doesn't remember which. And Wyatt Cain, a former lawman who had to watch a holographic loop of his family being torchured for the last 8 years. The experience left him cold and possibly hearltess. DG will have to rely on these 3 to complete her mission. Unfortunately, the further along she goes the more DG realizes nothing is what it seems and she'll have to rethink much of what she thought she knew.

    Because it is a mini-series and gets 4 1/2 hours, Tin Man gets to expand on its story and each of the "main" characters gets their own small plot-line. There are a couple other things that go along with it being just a mini-series and not a feature film as well. First, the special effects. Ok, on the whole they look really good but there are a couple of places they just look really...off. These are only a couple though and are forgiveable. They actually managed to get some well known actors for the parts. Alan Cumming as Glitch is perfect. He knows how to play the comic relief but show dept too. Neal McDonough as Cain is also amazing. He and Alan play off each other so well. The only low point in the acting is Zooey Deschanel as DG. It's not unbearable but her monotone can seem unrealistic and misplaced at times. Her performance is not the best but it can be overlooked (esspecially with Alan and Neal taking up the slack).

    This is great for all ages. Give it a shot.
