After proving itself a survivor on Friday nights -- widely regarded as the TV schedule’s killing fields -- Knight Rider roared back for a second season in the fall of 1983, with David Hasselhoff again behind the wheel. Rescued after being shot in the face while in the line of duty, police officer Michael Long undergoes facial reconstruction and assumes a new identity, Michael Knight, crime-fighter, in the service of millionaire Wilton Knight’s Knight Industries. His partner is a talking supercar (with William Daniels’s voice) named K.I.T.T., and the extended crime-fighting family includes Knight manager Devon Miles (Edward Mulhare) and mechanic April Curtis (Rebecca Holden), who replaced Season 1's Bonnie (Patricia MacPherson). The only other significant changes from the ’82-’83 run are to K.I.T.T., who now boasts an enhanced turbo boost, the ability to tread water, and a trajectory guide feature for missiles. The fan-favorite two-part episode "Goliath" starts the season off, wherein the late Wilton Knight's estranged son, Garthe, the model for Michael Knight's facial reconstruction, returns and steals the formula for K.I.T.T.'s bulletproof plating to create an armored 18-wheeler. Hasselhoff plays the duel roles of Michael and Garthe in this episode and in another two-parter later in the season, "Goliath Returns." Other notable episodes include: "Merchants of Death," wherein the duo take on an attack helicopter; "Knightmares," which returns Knight to his original persona of Michael Long after he loses his memory; and the season finale, "Big Iron," in which Knight and K.I.T.T. are buried alive in a rock quarry. Guest turns this season include Barbara Rush, star of 1953's It Came from Outer Space, Animal House dean John Vernon, a pre-Murphy Brown Robert Pastorelli, and future Oscar winner Geena Davis in one of her earliest roles.
