In addition to being one of the more clever romantic mystery series of the 1980s, Remington Steele made a star of handsome, dashing Pierce Brosnan, whose light-footed turn as an accidental detective proved a perfect shaking-and-stirring ground for the role of James Bond. The show's gimmick was deceptively simple: The eponymous investigator played by Brosnan was really just a front for plucky private investigator Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), forced to invent a male counterpart to satisfy clients who were reluctant to entrust cases to a young woman. Brosnan's Steele is himself a man of mystery, a dashing if honorable thief who -- recognizing Holt’s ruse and beguiled by her beauty and spunk -- adopts the "Steele" name and joins the team. Beyond that, Remington's writers spiced up the show by making Steele a movie buff whose constant allusions to classic films not only reflected his pop-culture erudition but also sparked ideas or prompted action that saved the day. Even the episode titles were clever, each one involving a play on the title character's name. "Thou Shalt Not Steele" is notable for its casting of Brosnan's then wife, Cassandra Harris, in a key guest-star role. In "Etched in Steele," Holt, Steele and their Season 1 partners, Bernice (Janet DeMay) and Murphy (James Read), try to learn who killed a famous female author of steamy romance novels. "Steele's Gold" is quite an offbeat installment, revolving around the theft of an old prospector's map and the detectives' trek through the desert in search of a lost gold strike. The best episode of the 1982-83 group is probably "In the Steele of the Night," which focuses on Laura's reunion with fellow co-workers -- a reunion in which old grievances are aired and murder rears its ugly head.
