    Mork and Mindy's Pam Dawber plays the title role in this hour-long adaptation of The Little Mermaid. This is the tale of a beautiful young mermaid with an exquisite singing voice, who falls in love with a human being. To gain "human-hood" herself, she must give up all that she holds dear-including her voice. The spirit of the original Hans Christian Andersen story is strictly adhered to, with some delightfully anachronistic interpolations. Ms. Dawber is ably supported by such reliables as Brian Dennehy, Karen Black, Treat Williams and Helen Mirren. The Little Mermaid was originally telecast on the Showtime cable service as part of the Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre anthology. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

    March 14, 2006: This is the live action Faerie Tale Theater Adaptation of The Little Mermaid and stars Pam Dawber from Mork and Mindy as the mermaid. The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite fairytales when I was a child so I really enjoyed watching this. I have read reviews on other web sites for this adaptation in which some of the reviewers trash it becasue it is different than the Disney cartoon and I have to assume those people never read the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. As much as I love the Disney animated version it's really not all that faithful to Andersen's story and had a happy Disneyized ending while this version remains true to the sad and bittersweet ending of Andersen's story and also includes the scary scene with the knife and the Mermaids jealousy over the prince's girlfriend. I would highly recommend this version to anyone familar with Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale!
