Full Product DetailsCan two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy? Rediscover the answer to that question with the classic 1970 series The Odd Couple. The series stars Tony Randall and Jack Klugman as polar opposites Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. Oscar is a cigar-chomping sportswriter whose idea of decoration is dirty socks on his lampshade. Felix is a hypochondriac neat-freak photographer who would likely be, were this show made today, fabulously gay. Based on Neil Simon's wildly successful 1965 Broadway play (featuring Walter Matthau and Art Carney as Oscar and Felix, respectively), and the equally successful 1968 movie version (with Matthau and Jack Lemmon), The Odd Couple began young producer Garry Marshall's remarkable '70s hot streak, which continued with Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Mork & Mindy. With clever scripts, sharp direction, and casting that equaled its esteemed forerunners, The Odd Couple debuted at 9:30 on ABC's Thursday night schedule, following an all-black adaptation of Simon' s Barefoot in the Park featuring Scoey Mitchell and Tracy Reed. Barefoot bombed, Couple clicked -- and, after a January '71 move to ABC's Friday night lineup, the show built a loyal, if never quite chart-topping, audience. Both Randall and Klugman earned Emmy Awards for their performances over the course of the series' five-season run, but the show built its legacy largely in syndication, where it ranks with such giants as The Honeymooners, Seinfeld, and other alternatives to the late local news. This set includes all 24 episodes from the 1970-71 season, along with tons of bonus material, including: audio intros by Marshall for each episode; commentary on three episodes; original TV promos; appearances by Klugman and Randall on The Mike Douglas Show; a gag reel; an entire bonus disc devoted to Klugman and Randall's favorite episodes from five seasons; and more.
