Jane Goodall's lifelong study of chimpanzees -- which revolutionized scientific views on animal intelligence -- has been the source of various films (among them Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzee), but in this PBS documentary, the cameras are turned on Goodall herself. It is not a typical nature film, but rather an inspiring portrait of a woman who exemplifies the spirit of the human animal at its most indomitable. The film explores Goodall's early career in Africa -- where she kept a years-long, lonely vigil over the chimp population at the Gombe Stream Reserve -- then follows her to England, San Francisco, and Paris as she campaigns 300 days a year against the deforestation of the chimp's habitat. Although her primary opponents in this battle are homo sapiens, Goodall has not lost her faith in the basic goodness of man. Jane Goodall: A Reason for Hope celebrates the journey of a woman who is a tireless, living demonstration that one's actions can make a difference. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
