Like its bestselling predecessor, Left Behind II is a solidly entertaining supernatural thriller infused with millennial Christian evangelism and inspired by "end times" prophecies from the Book of Revelations. When global chaos ensues, a desperate world turns to charismatic United Nations president Nicolae Carpathia (Gordon Currie) for leadership. Only a small group of people, led by TV journalist Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron), knows the truth: Carpathia is the Antichrist, and his rise to power presages the Apocalypse. This tense, fast-moving sequel picks up where the first film left off, with millions of people having vanished into thin air and the Antichrist paving the way for the Final Conflict. Left Behind II covers the same ground recently trod in the Omega Code movies (which, like the Left Behind films, are produced by evangelical Christians); but rather than being annoyed by the obvious similarities, true believers will see it as reinforcing their heartfelt convictions. Others will enjoy it as rousing entertainment. Dramatically speaking, the film is a little bit ham-handed, but the production values are solid and the acting free of condescension. Cameron and his real-life wife, Chelsea Noble (veterans of the TV series Growing Pains and conservative Christians themselves), make a fine onscreen team and help ground the film's fanciful premise. The DVD version includes a "making of" documentary, cast and crew interviews, deleted and extended scenes, an alternate ending, and a feature-length director commentary. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
