Filmed in Vancouver, this Hallmark Hall of Fame takes place during the '70s in the U.S. After the death of her mother, Charlotte (Glynis O'Connor), 10-year-old Ellen Foster (Jena Malone, who narrates) suffers abuse from her alcoholic father (Ted Levine) and is ill-treated by her maternal aunts Nadine (Debra Monk) and Betsy (Barbara Garrick) and also by Nadine's mean daughter Dora (Kimberly Brown). Ellen is sent to live with her grief-stricken grandmother Leonora (Julie Harris), but her problems continue since the mean-spirited Leonora blames Ellen for Charlotte's death. Harry Nilsson's song, "Remember Christmas," is featured. This TV movie premiered December 14, 1997 on CBS. Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

January 26, 2001: Ellen is a lost girl who needs to be found. She has so many hardships in her life, from abusive farther to her cruel grandmother who blames Ellen for her mother?s death. Many people contribute to Ellen?s life and influence how she looks and feels about things. To start, she has a bitter grandmother that hates over something that Ellen can?t help ? she?s the daughter of ?trash?. Ellen never even sees her grandmother until her grandmother is forced to see Ellen. Shortly after, the death of Ellen?s grandmother leaves her alone again. So there?s Ellen with nobody, left all alone, no family left to love her. During this movie Ellen does find some good people who do care about her and try to lift her spirits. Ellen finds that blood isn?t thicker than water because she does find a family who loves her, who aren?t even blood relatives. I recommend this book to any one with a loving heart.

January 23, 2001: This movie was about this little girl named Ellen, who was 11 years old. She faced many challenges in her young life. She was a determined, confused and emotionally strong child that had lost her mother. Her father was the only one who was left and he was not the kind of person that a little girl needed. Ellen had other relatives who could have helped. She had a mean, miserable grandmother who didn?t want anything to do with Ellen. Her aunts Nadine and Betsy were too self-centered to show compassion toward a child. Dora, her cousin, was a jealous and spoiled brat who was cruel to Ellen. Ellen found more compassion from acquaintances than family. Her art teacher and best friend Starletta were especially kind to her. I recommend that you watch the movie to find out if Ellen ever finds the kind of family that she dreams about.
