Aroma-Rama Charles Weiss invented this system of bringing "Oriental" scents into the theatre through the air-conditioning system (1959). The purpose of Aroma-Rama and its contemporary reapplication, Smell-o-vision, were developed to entice audiences back to the theatre and away from their televisions. In movie theatres this process was attempted as early as 1906 and 1929 to add punch to the talkies. Historically, however, English theatres of the nineteenth century would spray "oriental" scents like lilac water to add atmosphere to the theatre. In 1981 John Waters attempted a revision of this idea with "scratch-and-sniff" cards.
