Editorial Reviews

This romantic drama concerns two star-crossed lovers who are half-brother and sister to each other. Catherine (Anna Calder-Marshall) is the daughter of the lord of the manor who falls for the brooding stable boy Heathcliff (Timothy Dalton). When Heathcliff leaves to seek his fortune, he returns to find Catherine has married the local magistrate Edgar (Ian Ogilvy). The story is told by the beautiful blonde servant girl Nellie (Judy Cornwell), who narrates at the beginning to set the stage for the picture. Hindley (Julian Glover) is Catherine's older brother who tries to take over the house and land after the death of their father (Harry Andrews). When his own wife and child dies, a drunken Hindley gambles away the family holdings to the opportunistic Heathcliffe. Filmed in England, the scenery is spectacular but this version lacks the foreboding, shadowy drama of the 1939 original starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

August 05, 2006: After all the other five star reviews that were given, I thought somebody ought to list the reasons why you might be offended by this movie-just in case anyone wants to know what they're getting before they spend their money on it. Yes, it has a good storyline-at least, an entertaining one. Timothy Dalton gives a very strong performance as Heathcliff-extremely intense and the supporting actors are for the most part believable. If the film were edited, it would be an enjoyable movie. However: -bad language is liberal throughout the movie, including a number of times where God's name is taken in vain -the womens' dresses are indecent that might have been the style of the time period, but raising the necklines an inch or two (or three) would have made it much better -there are several crude scenes with inappropriate actions-including one that gives more than adequate reason to suspect that Cathy's baby may not be Edgar's(her husband)I fastforwarded through this scene so I'm not sure just how far it went-but you get the idea. Most people won't care about all this-I just thought I'd write a caution for anyone who isn't sure of the content and doesn't want to buy something that will offend them.

June 01, 2006: This movie is what possessed me to read the novel-certainly one of the best books ever to be called a classic. Timothy Dalton captures all the savageness and wild passion of Heathcliff. He, however, is one of the few charaters whom I felt played their roles effectively. All were either overly emotional or stagnant in their performance. I also felt it undermined the story to change it so much. If you watch this movie, don't take your eyes off Timothy! If you simply want to experience a stirring love story, read the book instead!
