Emily Bronte's enduring tale of a love struggling against all odds is brought to the screen once again in this adaptation created for British television. Cathy (Orla Brady) is the daughter of the goodhearted Hareton Earnshaw (Matthew MacFadyen), who allows a lost soul, Heathcliff (Robert Cavanah), to move into their home. While Cathy and Heathcliff outwardly appear to have little in common, they soon feel a strong attraction to one another, and Heathcliff pledges his undying love to her. However, circumstances conspire to keep them apart; Cathy's brother doesn't want Heathcliff to see her, her wealthy family sees a marriage between them as unthinkable, and in time Cathy agrees to an arranged marriage with Edgar Linton (Crispin Bonham-Carter). But none of this changes the desire Heathcliff feels for the woman he loves. Wuthering Heights first aired in the United States as part of the award-winning anthology series Masterpiece Theatre. August 09, 2009: I have to agree with another review as this being the closest adaption of the book. Hollywood romanticized Heathcliff and Cathy for us to "like" them. The story is about loves dark, dark side..and it is not romantic most of the time. The selfishness, loss, and crulety is all there just like the book. Read the book again, this is why it is timeless. I am not in love with this version, it's hard to watch at times, I did'nt like to see Heathcliff so tortured and in turn be so cruel. But again, he was in the book.

I did enjoy the young Cathy and Hareton, they needed to spend a bit more time with them. You can see even then how Matthew MacFadyen as Hareton shines with just a look in his eyes, then the voice.

All the actors were very good.

But, yes, hard to watch even though it is the most accurate.

Little if any room to like the charactersby Anonymous

June 16, 2009: Nothing like my recollection (from the book). Heathcliff totally out of control, he's utterly despicable--not one ounce of sympathy or connection towards him (not even when he's a little orphan kid). Characters should have brought some humanness that connected the viewer... only part I liked was that of Mathew MacFadyen (reason I bought it to start with).
