Employing the same formula they used to help make Cheers the comedy hit of the '80s, producers David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee set their sights on the flighty sitcom Wings in 1990. Starting out as midseason filler in April 1990, Wings eventually went on to an impressive eight seasons for NBC. An ensemble comedy much like Cheers, Wings starred Tim Daly and Steven Weber as brothers Joe and Brian Hackett, proprietors of Sandpiper Air, a single-plane commuter service on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Joining them in this venture are their childhood best friend, Helen (Crystal Bernard), an aspiring concert cellist who runs the lunch counter; Fay (Rebecca Schull), the ticket-counter clerk and advice-dispensing mother hen; Lowell (Thomas Haden Church), the dimwit airplane mechanic; and the brothers' foil, Roy (David Schramm), who owns competing airline AeroMass and delights in his rivals' sibling rivalry (Joe tends to be serious and realistic, while Brian is the airy free spirit). The six episodes of Season 1 introduce the series' premise and build on the characters we will come to know and love. Keep an eye out for Will & Grace's Megan Mullally in the role of Cindy in "There Once Was a Girl from Nantucket." In Season 2's full order of 22 shows, notable episodes include: "The Story of Joe," in which two familiar faces from the mainland pop up -- Cliff (John Ratzenberger) and Norm (George Wendt); "A Little Nightmare Music," with David Ogden Stiers guesting as an acerbic orchestra conductor; and "Airport '90," the beginning of what becomes a seven-year, on-again-off-again love affair between Joe and Helen. Also in Season 2, Tony Shalhoub begins his recurring role as Antonio Scarpacci, a character so enjoyed by fans that it led to his joining the cast full-time by Season 3. June 27, 2006: I loved this show when it was on TV and now, finally, I can watch it whenever I want. It took far too long for them to release this on DVD. I cannot wait for seasons 3-8. One of the greatest shows of all time.
