Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken tells a remarkable true story that will hold adults' interest while presenting a positive role model to inspire children. Gabrielle Anwar gives a winning performance as Sonora Webster, a kindred spirit to such strong-willed, independent-minded Disney heroines as Belle and Ariel. Growing up during the Great Depression in a small, rural Georgia town, Sonora hears destiny’s call to greater things. She is rebellious, defiant, and a burden to her beleaguered aunt. To avoid being turned over to the state, she runs away and answers a newspaper ad seeking a young girl to ride diving horses for a circus stunt show. Veteran actor Cliff Robertson costars as the gruff show owner, W. F. Carver, who reluctantly hires Sonora as a stable hand. But her “I can do it because I can do anything” spirit wins him over, and she becomes a star stunt show rider in fabled Atlantic City. And what a show! The act requires her to leap from a 40-foot tower platform astride a horse and plunge into a tank of water. Sonora’s spunk will serve her well when she accidentally hits the water with her eyes open and loses her sight. Wild Hearts isn’t nearly as hokey as its title. Poised for rediscovery on DVD, this 1991 favorite is an old-fashioned family film in the best Disney tradition. Take the plunge. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
