Editorial Reviews

This latter-day romantic screwball comedy stars Sandra Bullock as a love-starved subway toll booth operator, Lucy. Lucy pines for regular customer Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher), but the self-absorbed attorney pays her no heed. One day, Peter is beaten by a gang of thugs and tossed onto the tracks. Lucy rescues him from death. While he is comatose in the hospital, a comment she makes at his bedside is misinterpreted, and she then allows his family members, who haven't seen Peter in awhile, to believe that she is his fiancée. Peter's parents, Ox (Peter Boyle) and Midge (Micole Mercurio), take a liking to Lucy. But Lucy takes a liking to Peter's brother Jack (Bill Pullman), though Jack is suspicious about her claim to be Peter's intended. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

February 10, 2009: What a wonderful feel good movie. Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is in love with Peter, (Peter Gallagher), which she has never met, but is thrown into his world after she saves him from being hit by a train. She meets his dysfunctional family in the hospital (Peter is in a coma and the family is under the assumption that Lucy is Peter's fiance. She is then introduced to Peter's brother, Jack (Bill Pullman),and sparks fly. She is in turmoil with her newfound feelings for Jack and trying to keep us the pretense with Peter's family about her engagement to Peter. After a few mishaps, true love wins! The Chicago scenery & atmosphere is true to form. A family friendly movie and a real treat.

November 30, 2008: For my family, it's a tradition to watch Ever After and While You Were Sleeping every time we get together. I guess that all families have their quirks, but I like this quirk. My aunt, sister, and I would peel out pajamas, ice cream, and blankets as we would snuggle down to watch While You Were Sleeping, and I have to admit that is where some of my favorite memories were born. This film oozes with family bonding. I can already hear Jack and Peter's mother repeating, "These mashed potatoes are so creamy!" And Elsie's there offering her infamous eggnog. Saul, the angelic godfather is there, smoking his cigar and offering up wise advice to lonely Lucy. Just like Dan in Real Life, While You Were Sleeping dabbles in family life, humor, heartache, and a little bit of romance. So go ahead and start your own family experience with While You Were Sleeping. You won't regret it. ;)
