Editorial Reviews

When in Rome, do what the Olsens do: That is, see the sights, find romance, and bring a corporate crook to justice. Mary-Kate and Ashley star as sisters Charli and Leila, who begin a six-week summer internship with a global fashion and entertainment company headquartered in Rome. The plucky sisters never lose their all-American charm as they compete with their international co-workers for a plum personal assistant position, suffer various fiascos, and rally the troops for the inevitable save-the-day happy ending. While not as frolicsome as the Olsens' previous video excursions to London, Paris, and Australia, the G-rated When in Rome compensates with local color and the appeal of the indefatigable heroines. It's admirable that Mary-Kate and Ashley are not presented as girls gone wild. They may be on the lookout for Italian boys and eager to "learn the language of romance," but they are first and foremost conscientious workers eager to soak up Italy's culture, history, and landmarks. Nothing here tampers with their wholesome image. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble

May 16, 2004: This Movie was okay. It's very much like the other movies put out there by Mary-Kate and Ashley.

July 29, 2003: When In Rome is not some involved and moving drama. It is not a well-developed comedy. It is not an exciting action adventure. It is an Olsen twin's movie, and that is all. If you are a fan of the Olsen twins (I am a teen myself and love them and am not ashamed to admit it), then you will quite simply love this movie. It is mostly Mary-Kate and Ashley parading around in beautiful clothes, kissing cute boys. And I loved it for those reasons. Plot isn't important. It is just an enjoyable movie for teens who admire them and families who want something to watch together. When compared to the other Olsen movies, this one is not the best, but it is fun, colorful, and you just might learn something about one of the most romantic and historic countries in the world!
