Editorial Reviews

Two sisters learn that the bonds of family don't always end after death in this gentle observational comedy drama that marks celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's 16th feature. The story explores the interactions between three generations of women in a Spanish family. Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) was born and raised in the apocryphal village of Alcanfor de las Infantas, in La Mancha, Spain. However, she now resides in Madrid, where she works as a janitor. She is married to Paco (Antonio de la Torre), an unemployed layabout, and looks after her daughter, Paula (Yohana Cobo). Raimunda's mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), died several years back (along with her father) in a house fire. Raimunda's younger sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), also lives in Madrid and works as a hair stylist, while their aunt Paula (Chus Lampreave) still makes her home in La Mancha, with occasional help from neighbor Agustina (Blanca Portillo). The story takes an unusual and mystical twist when Agustina mentions that Irene has begun reappearing in ghostly form -- a fact questioned by Raimunda and Sole. After a murder and an unexpected family tragedy, Paula's story is indeed corroborated by the appearance of Irene's spirit (who has come to comfort her family), and Sole must decide how to respond to the long-dead mother's strange, enchanting presence. May 28, 2007: This is a great movie, though it's all in Spanish, I didn't find that in any way a drawback. This movie is amazing and captivating. The performances are excellent and the plot is amazing!!

May 14, 2007: In traditional horror films, the killer slashes his victims, leaves them to bleed, and if he's generous, he buries them. In Almodovor film, he does that, and so much more. Turning what you'd expect to be a gory flick into an in depth emotional masterpiece. Raimunda, played flawlessly by Penelope Cruz, is the mother of a middle class, spanish language family. She lives day by day working as a waitress, a laundrymat runner, and a janitor. After taking a city bus, she arrives home to her daughter Paula, named after Raimunda's Aunt Paula, and her husband Paco. On her time off, her daughter, and sister Sole accompany her as she cleans graves, and visits her unwell Aunt Paula. Afterword, the group visits Agustina, the family friend who everyday looks over Aunt Paula to make sure she isn't rotting in her easy chair. One night, after returning from a hellish day at work, Paco informs Raimunda he has lost his job. Hysterical, she goes off on her now unemployed husband as he's watching soccer, ranting, "There'll be no more cable. We are a poor family, and we'll live like one. Paula, put that phone down!" The following evening, Paco is laying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor, a knife in his stomach. What is this now widowed woman to do, except put her decaying husband in a freezer to preserve him? Well, that's what she does, and with her daughters help. Matters get even worse when her Aunt Paula, suffering from blindness and uncontrollable shaking, passes away. All at the same time, Raimunda is asked to host a week long lunch for a film crew of 30. Working with only the help of her daughter, and her hooker friend, Regina. While Raimunda sorts everything out, Agustina is diagnosed with cancer. Meanwhile, Sole is repeatedly visited by her dead mother, who died in a home fire. Raimunda is sent from good wife and mother and thrown into an unstable emotional wreck in the course of a week. With her sister Sole keeping the visions of her surely dead mother a secret, and Raimunda keeping Paco's death a secret, when will the truth come out? By the shocking finale, Raimunda will battle with her family, and her own sanity to keep everything together, and everyone...
