Editorial Reviews

A true milestone in the history of sci-fi television, this three-part miniseries (which originally aired on NBC in 1984) provides a suspenseful, action-packed conclusion to the original V. As Final Battle opens, mankind seems ready to share Earth with extraterrestrials known as the Visitors, whose humanoid appearance conceals not only their hideous, lizardlike form but also their genocidal aspirations. Having insinuated themselves into daily life on our planet, the Visitors are opposed by a relatively small, intrepid band known as the Resistance. Mike Donovan (Marc Singer) and Ham Tyler (Michael Ironside) lead a race against time to turn Earth's people against the Visitors and forestall the planned nuclear annihilation of Homo sapiens (and, mind you, pretty much everything else around). Series creator Kenneth Johnson once claimed that V was inspired by a 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel, It Can't Happen Here, in which America gradually succumbed to fascism; the scripting of this 272-minute epic certainly reflects this inspiration, but it also reflects the influences of many other sci-fi movies and series. Director Richard T. Heffron (Futureworld) maintains a surprisingly mature and serious tone throughout, eschewing the simplistic conventions of old-fashioned space opera to make Final Battle more believable and, therefore, truly gripping. A large cast performs without any trace of camp or condescension, and what were then state-of-the-art special effects are employed to heighten realism. Epic in scope and painstakingly crafted, V: The Final Battle is an unforgettable adventure whose new DVD edition sci-fi fans will treasure for years to come. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

December 26, 2003: Watching the same basic theme over and over again I stared to look in the past. There I found ' V: The Final Battle' one of the greatest stories ever told , which is so realistic that I almost believed it to be true. My hope is that other people see it as I did at the age of seventeen. Ramming popcorn in their mouths watched the film not noticing that they had spilt upon the floor, or that they are sitting on the very edge of their sets until they are over whelmed with fulfillment when the film ends. I now know that when I watched that thriller, it became my curse to find something just as great. So will the next person who dares to satisfy their desire for adventure within their home.
