This colorful adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's novella Up at the Villa benefits enormously from the powerful performances of Sean Penn and Kristin Scott Thomas. It's a romantic drama set in the beautiful Italian city of Florence during the late 1930s, as Mussolini's fascist government begins ramping up for the anticipated war in Europe. The action centers around a group of expatriates, most prominently American reprobate Rowley Flint (Penn) and recently widowed British socialite Mary Pantin (Thomas), who are thrown together just as political tensions are escalating. Director Philip Haas (Angels & Insects) and his production team re-create the period in painstaking detail, and the screenplay effectively delineates the almost mind-boggling insularity of the moneyed expatriates, who are oblivious to the growing threat posed by fascists. Anne Bancroft, letter-perfect as a gossipy dowager, heads a marvelous supporting cast that includes James Fox, Derek Jacobi, and Massimo Ghini, but it's the smoldering intensity of Penn and Thomas that makes this Villa one worth visiting.
