Editorial Reviews

The most successful legal import from Colombia since coffee, Ugly Betty is an Americanized version of the hit Colombian soap opera Yo Soy Betty La Fea. This "Bettyfied Edition" of the show's triumphant first season introduces Betty Suarez (a.k.a. Ugly Betty), played by America Ferrera (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). Both Ferrara and the show itself earned Golden Globes for this debut run, with its vividly hilarious depiction of a determined square peg's adventures in a universe of round holes. The bespectacled Betty Suarez is the true beauty in the skin-deep world of high fashion, but she toils as the assistant to dashing womanizer Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius), editor-in-chief of the fashion industry bible MODE. Both are newcomers to the ultra-competitive fashion scene and need to constantly beat back attacks from their jealous enemies: fashion diva Wilhelmina (former Miss America Vanessa Williams), her toadying assistant, Marc (Michael Urie), and conniving receptionist Amanda (Becki Newton). Away from the glitz of Manhattan, Betty lives in Queens with her supportive family: loving father Ignacio (Tony Plana); spitfire sister Hilda (Ana Ortiz); and fashion-obsessed nephew Justin (Mark Indelicato). This box includes all 23 episodes on six DVDs, as well as a full complement of original featurettes, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, bloopers, and a Spanish audio track. From the Studio

August 23, 2007: I love Ugly Betty for the same reason I love technicolor musicals and bubblegum: its purely entertaining and fun! Betty is someone who is easy to love. She is all of us. She means well and tries too hard and never gets credit for it. She isn't the most obviously beautiful snowflake, but the most overlooked and interesting. The plot is entertaining in a way which borrows some of its on-going mysteries and cliff-hangers from the likes of soap-operas and Desperate Housewives, but it shines brighter with its wit and colorful characters. It doesn't leave you hanging for too long either "as does Housewives". Its easy to watch and be entertained by and it takes you out of the everyday and into Betty's world. I can't wait for the second season, which I hope is as unique and refreshing as the first! Hurray Betty!
