    This award winning made-for-cable movie tells the story of American President Harry S.Truman and his role in the second World War. Gary Sinese stars in the title role of this biographical account, which is based on Pulitzer Prize-winner David McCullough's book. The film chronicles Truman's rise from unknown farmer to infamous American President -- who is chiefly remembered for being the first to use the atomic bomb. Diana Scarwid stars as Truman's wife Bess. Nominated for many awards that year, the film won the Emmy for "Best Made-for-Television Movie."     January 11, 2009: You'd figure that with the great Gary Sinise in the title role and David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of our 33rd president as the backbone of the script, it would be hard to make a movie about Harry Truman's life that was anything but spectacular. Yet somehow HBO's "Truman" does just that. Not that it's bad, but it's flatter than Truman's Missouri accent.

    Covering Truman's life from 1917, when he enlisted in the Army despite his age and poor eyesight, up until the end of his presidency in 1953, the film seems to jump along in fits and starts, linked by a series of newsreels with poor voice-over narration (perhaps trying to emulate the use of Fox MovieTone newsreels in "Patton"?). It's only the excellent performances that tie this film together, particularly Sinise's pitch-perfect portrayal of 'Give 'em Hell' Harry, Diana Scarwid as his wife Bess, and Colm Feore as boyhood friend and press secretary Charlie Ross.

    Perhaps it's simply the wide scope of the film -- trying to cover 40 years of a man's life in two hours, whereas "Patton" only covered the general's involvement in World War II, and the more recent "John Adams" was a 7-part miniseries. Whatever the reason, this film hardly does justice to McCullough's massive examination of Truman's life and presidency, and it's only worth watching to see a master thespian like Gary Sinise practice his craft.
