Editorial Reviews

In 1999, veteran rocker Tom Petty and his band the Heartbreakers played an epic 20-night stand at San Francisco's historic Fillmore West auditorium, in which they treated audiences to new material as well as highlights from their over 20 years as one of America's great rock bands. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: High Grass Dogs -- Live From the Fillmore is a live video culled from the group's San Francisco concert series; they perform 18 songs, including "Free Girl Now," "Swingin'," "Free Fallin'," "Running Down a Dream," "Even the Losers," "Breakdown," and "Jamming Me." Rock legend Bo Diddley also stops by to join in on his classic song "Mona." Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

February 04, 2003: Right off the bat, I have to say that I am a little biased. I attended one of the shows during the week-long engagement that this was taped from. It was a special show and it is well documented here. Tom led the unbelievably tight Heartbreakers through an assortment of material. From the hits to some classic covers. The Fillmore is a small place and you really get the feel of the intimacy that night. Tom Petty delivers each song with passion. He has sung ''Breakdown'' a million times but here it looks like he is singing it for the first time. The only complaints I have about this DVD are that there are no extra features and that the director decided to inject road crew snippets between songs. This to me was intrusive and hurt the flow of the concert. It was an historical week for the San Francisco music scene and the magic can be relived on this DVD

October 30, 2002: Well done. The songs are well-played with emotional involvement by all concerned. Tom was probably a little buzzed, but it doesn't get in the way. The sound is excellent, the camera work more than adequate.
