Thicker than Water -- winner of Surfer magazine's Video of the Year award in 1999 -- is a labor of love by musician Jack Johnson and brothers Chris and Emmett Malloy, who portray the ocean's siren call with remarkable fidelity. Weaving visuals and memories of their surfing experiences in North America, the South Pacific, and the Bengal, the team's 16-mm film images combine evocatively with Johnson's rich score, as well as songs from G. Love, the Meters, and Finley Quaye. The 45-minute film is accompanied on DVD by an additional 20 minutes of footage, a photo gallery of stills taken by Chris Malloy and Todd Messick, and directors' commentary from Johnson and the Malloys. A companion CD of Johnson's music for the film is also available.
