Set in the Dakota Territory just before the Civil War, this 1989 ABC series followed the exploits of a group of young Pony Express riders based in Sweetwater, Kansas. The series’ leads are Stephen Baldwin as William (the future "Buffalo Bill") Cody, and Josh Brolin as Jim (eventually "Wild Bill") Hickok. The other Young Riders include the Kid (Ty Miller); Ike (Travis Swain); Buck (Gregg Rainwater); Louise (Yvonne Suhor); a pre-Homicide: Life on the Street Melissa Leo as Emma, the group's mother hen; and Anthony Zerbe as "Teaspoon" Hunter, the station manager. While the riders are shown braving the dangers of carrying mail through hostile Indian country, they also go the extra distance -- coming to the aid of the downtrodden and helpless. In "Black Ulysses," for instance, the boys shelter a runaway slave; "A Good Day to Die" finds the Kid uncovering a plot to steal Indian land; Hickok stops a corrupt brothel owner from stealing army supplies in "Fall From Grace"; and Buck faces a decision of whether or not to join his people or stay with his friends when the Kiowa declare war in "Home of the Brave." Despite the requisite frontier gun violence, The Young Riders is a tame addition to the cowboy TV drama, and with its positive message about morals and values, is suitable for family viewing.
