Veteran producer/director Diane English (The Lathe of Heaven, Murphy Brown) helms this contemporized remake of George Cukor's beloved proto-feminist comedy drama The Women (1939), an adaptation of Clare Boothe Luce's play. The English version follows the gossip, bitchy wisecracking, and overall disillusionment that erupt among a group of socialite friends when their dearest and most envied learns of her husband's marital infidelity at the hands of a backstabbing shopgirl. The all-female cast is fronted by Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Candice Bergen, with supporting roles inhabited by Bette Midler, Cloris Leachman, and Carrie Fisher. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

Definitely not a 1930's film...by christineedith08

July 15, 2009: Meg Ryan's character, Mary Haines, asked it best, "What is this, a movie from the 30's?" And the answer is definitely not! When I first watched "The Women," I must admit that I was a little disappointed. I went into the theater thinking that it was going to be exactly like the movie I had seen from the 1930's starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russel. But in all fact, I should have known that today's society is no longer like that of the thirties, so instead of seeing the women stab each other in the back you see the women trying to support each other.

This movie keeps the main plot and a lot of the "quick wit" that was so known for the earlier version. Today's "The Women" shows how far we as a society have come, being supportive and allowing the original lesbian character from the play to be incorporated in today's movie (left out due to censorship of the era).

I would suggest this movie to all sorts of women, whether young, old, rich, or poor. Whomever watches this movie will walk away with a sense of empowerment and that "can do anything" attitude. I also suggest that if you have the time to watch the version from 1939, just to see how different the two really are. Enjoy the movie, I sure did!

March 09, 2009: Not overwhelmingly stimulating but quite enjoyable. Would not recommend watching this with a guy.
