Editorial Reviews

Hollywood magic has rarely worked as well as it did in MGM's adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel. This fairy tale about a Kansas farm girl who is swept by a tornado into the land of the Munchkins has burned itself into the collective consciousness of generations of moviegoers. By today's standards, the special effects look primitive, but when Dorothy (Judy Garland) steps out of monochromatic Kansas into the Technicolor splendor of Oz, the moment still invokes wonder. And the songs, especially the Academy Award-winning "Over the Rainbow," remain infectious. As the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, and Cowardly Lion, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, and Bert Lahr, respectively, bring humor and humanity to their make-believe characters, while the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) remains among the screen's scariest villains. Finally, though, it is the emotional truthfulness of Judy Garland's performance, infused with all the yearnings of adolescence, that makes The Wizard of Oz a masterpiece. July 10, 2007: Probably not much. With the dozens of antidotes that surround the the production of this time treasured movie the production work is well documented except for maybe one. Many Historians of this movie forget that even with the more current restoration of two songs from this this well written movie there is still one last song that may never be seen - not because it was politically incorrect but because it was cut and has never been seen again. What production piece is this? Why it is the Jitterbug scene which takes place in the forest of the Wicked Witch. If you do not believe me ... watch for the scene just after the Dorothy and friends leave Oz and are in the Woods ... and ... just before the attack of the flying monkeys. Ask your self WHY is the Scarecrow on the ground??? and that is the end point of the lost Jitterbug scene. Even with this lost scene the movie still has remarkable saying power ... may it last forever!

October 27, 2006: The Wizard of Oz, a surreal and timeless production, is one of the most well known classics known to mankind. Dorothy, a small town Kansas farm girl, shows that wishes may really come true as she’s sent through a tornado into a land of munchkins, witches, tin men, and talking apple trees. She steps from a world lacking color and satisfaction into a land full of iridescent wonder with the drop of her house. Dorothy then wanders through this land, in crimson shoes, on a journey towards Emerald City to find her way back home. When it comes to this film it doesn’t matter what generation you come from. It’s for everybody. The Wizard of Oz frees people’s imaginations and allows them to predict what happens next. I would recommend this movie to anyone who would enjoy a classic tale of personification and wonder.
