At no other time since humans first contemplated the stars has our understanding of the unimaginably vast cosmos grown so rapidly. We know immeasurably more about what's beyond our atmosphere than we did a century ago. In this epic documentary miniseries, The Universe takes you to the leading edge of our ever-expanding astronomical knowledge. Using astronomy and history, these ten hours (13 episodes total) of unprecedented programming give unique insight -- through strikingly realistic computer recreations and animations -- on the great "Eureka!" moments of celestial understanding Experience the cosmos as no-one ever has: not peering at dots through a telescope or scanning pages of numbers, but firsthand. Flirt with a black hole's event horizon, rove the surface of Mars, plunge into the Sun. The series also gives serious, constructive consideration to the great human questions: Are we alone? Is Earth as insignificant to the cosmos as a drop of water? Is there anywhere else out there that that can support life? With 50 billion galaxies in The Universe (containing as many as 100 million stars) there's a lot of ground to cover. You'd better start watching now!

THE UNIVERSE installments are: "Secrets of the Sun"; "Mars: The Red Planet"; "The End of the Earth: Deep Space Threats To Our Planet"; "Jupiter: The Giant Planet"; "The Moon"; "Spaceship Earth"; "The Inner Planets: Mercury & Venus"; "Saturn: Lord of the Rings"; "Alien Galaxies"; "Life and Death of a Star"; "The Outer Planets"; "The Most Dangerous Place"; "Search for ET"; and "Beyond the Big Bang." October 19, 2009: Credible and simplistically told so that even my 7 year old is enthralled. Uses analogies in everyday life to explain some concepts.

I Also Recommend: First Space Encyclopedia.

June 29, 2009: This show is incredibly well done. Every episode is interesting and keeps your attention. It's great for the beginner as well as those who already follow astronomy. My daughter and I enjoyed watching these together, and even my wife would get hooked into them periodically if she happened to be in the room at the time. This is an entire season, too, so their are plenty of shows.
