A young woman discovers a terrible secret while caring for an elderly man in this supernatural thriller. Caroline (Kate Hudson) is a care provider for the aged who is hired away from the hospice where she works by Violet Devereaux (Gena Rowlands). Violet needs someone to help take care of her husband, Ben (John Hurt), who is in poor health and doesn't have long to live. Violet and Ben live in a decaying rattletrap mansion not far from New Orleans, and as she settles into her work, Caroline spends her spare time exploring the house. It isn't long before Caroline discovers evidence that suggests Ben and Violet are members of a sinister voodoo cult, and that ghosts walk in the Devereaux mansion. September 21, 2009: When the DVD arrived in the mail the disk was loose and banging against the DVD case. I opened it and found the disk full of scratches. Luckily the local B&N store had another copy; I had to drive there to make the exchange.

March 15, 2009: This film is not technically a horror movie. There is no gore or violence, so people watching it expecting Saw VIII will be disappointed. Rather, it is a movie that plays out more like a ghost story from long ago. The filming location is gorgeous - deep in the bayous of Louisiana. It certainly sets the very creepy, mysterious tone of the movie. Skeleton Key definitely requires you to think. You have to think carefully and remember clues given throughout the film to understand the ending. And, wow, what an ending! I saw this in the theater and my jaw dropped at the twist. Definitely one of the best thrillers to come out this decade. And when it's over, it makes you want to visit the Bayou!
