Editorial Reviews

After nine consistently funny years, the biggest fear fans had about the 1997-98 season of The Simpsons was a rumor that the family might now be drawn with (gasp!) five fingers. Luckily, nothing has changed, including quality: For the second year in a row, the show nabbed a Best Animated Program Emmy. Of course, there are a few missteps, but there are classics on this set not to be missed. In the season opener, "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson," Homer is forced to travel to the Big Apple -- a place where "when the sun goes down all the weirdos turn crazy" -- to reclaim his missing car. Along with winning an Emmy for Outstanding Music, this episode also holds a sad sentimentality (Homer's car is parked at the World Trade Center) and is rarely run in syndication. Homer buys a gun in "The Cartridge Family," although he's miffed at the required five-day waiting period: "Five days? But I'm mad now!" It's Lord of the Flies, Simpsons-style in "Das Bus" when Bart, Lisa, and the school's UN club get stranded on an island and Bart proclaims they will live like kings, "Only with more cursing! Damn, hell, ass, kings!" The best episode of the season, "Girly Edition," features Bart and Lisa competing for the anchor chair on the school news show, but it's Homer's story with Mojo the Helper Monkey that is downright hysterical. Finally, Homer and Marge have taken to "snuggling" in public places and get caught naked in "Natural Born Kissers." To escape they hijack a hot-air balloon, resulting in one of the greatest sight gags in Simpsons history. Guest voices heard in Season 9 include Martin Sheen, George Harrison, James Earl Jones, Helen Hunt, and Steve Martin. Season 9 carries the usual surfeit of extras, including commentary on every episode, animatics, deleted scenes, and a look at The Simpsons movie! Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble
