Bette Midler stars as Rose in this somber drama loosely based on the life of the late Janis Joplin. She plays an ill-fated singer who succumbs to the pressures of performing by indulging in drugs and alcohol. Her sweetheart Dyer (Frederic Forrest) is the former chauffeur who naively tries to save her from self destruction, while her British manager Rudge (Alan Bates) is ultimately blamed for not preventing her inevitable fall. The story mirrors any one of a number of popular singers who have fallen victim to the excess of success. Midler and Forrest were nominated for Oscars for their performances, with Best Editing laurels given to Timothy O'Meara and Robert Wolf. The Rose was a box office smash and was the plum role that elevated Midler to star status in the eyes of the public and Hollywood. Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

November 11, 2009: What a movie depicting the life of the late great Janice Joplin with a flair of the mid 70's era. I don't know how Bette was able to recover her smooth singing voice while screaming at the top of her lungs sounding like Janice's whiskey voice, it just amazes me every time I watch it. Being a true fan of Pearl nobody that I know of till this day has been able to "sing" with so much passion & emotion & yes there are allot of beautiful singers past & present (Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha) & the most current that are categorized as being "Divas" (Cher, Madonna, Beyonce) but to me no one has come close to Pearl. This movie also takes you back to the sex, drugs & rock n roll era before the major corporations took over the music industries concert promotions & sponsorships, (Pepsi, Clear Channel, Live Nation) also before lap top computers & cell phones existed. During the movie you see where she uses a hand held phone in the Limo & the old telephone booth looking for loose change to make a call, man times sure have changed, the movie also captures the time & energy during that era when the music mattered not how much "bling" you wore. If you want music, true emotions & the harsh realities of what drugs & booze can do to you, (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison) see this movie with an opened mind & enjoy seeing The Rose scream her heart out as she tries to hold on to her world as it crumbles around her. I stop to wonder if she would be considered a "Diva" if she were alive.

January 21, 2004: This is one of my favorite movies of all time. This I believe was Bette Midler's movie debut, and she blows me away everytime I watch this movie. There's some language but it wouldn't be the same without it. This movie I have heard was thinly veiled on the life of Janis Joplin. While I am a very big Janis Joplin fan, I did find some similarities, but that's it, this movie is it's own, and Janis Joplin's life was hers. They may have thought about her while writing the script, but this definately is NOT a bio on Janis Joplin. This movie is wonderfully put together, the music is great! Bette Midler can act, sing, and make you laugh and cry in this movie. What can't that woman do? I'm serious what can't she do? I love her and I love this movie, one of my top ten favorite movies of all time.
