    Editorial Reviews

Fans of late '60s rock and roll will find this documentary to be a rare and precious jewel, as it contains shining performances from such giants as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and The Who. Originally planned as a television special in 1968, it was shelved shortly after filming because the manager of the Stones, who were acting producers of the show, felt that another of the acts, The Who, upstaged them. The show is set up as a circus with the musicians appearing in elaborate psychedelic costumes. Other performers include Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and the only recently formed Jethro Tull. Also included is a one-of-a-kind performance by Dirty Mack, a one-night-stand band comprised of Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Richard, Jimi Hendrix and Yoko Ono. July 13, 2009: You'll probably love having a few of the songs here but some other clips you will never watch after the first time but it is certainly worth seeing at least once. The added interview with Pete Townsend is well worth the viewing as well.

February 01, 2005: I just got this DVD a few days ago and saw it for the first time (not including the Who's 'A Quick One' which most of us long have seen from 'The Kids Are Alright' and until the VHS release of 'Rock and Roll Circus' the only commercially available footage from that event). Contrary to B&N's review, Jimi Hendrix does not appear with John Lennon's one-off group the Dirty Mac (that it does include Mitch Mitchell from the Hendrix Exp, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton doing 'Yer Blues' is worthy enough for ownership of this DVD). One reviewer who was hoping for Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) commentary and dissapointed that there wasn't any - there in fact is, plus commentary from Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Marianne Faithful and Taj Mahal. You have to go to the 'set up' part of the DVD and make the appropriate commentary selection to hear the dialogue. What happens is you will see the DVD play normally but hear Bill, Keith, Ian, etc commentary play over the normal soundtrack and you can choose subtitles to view as well. It's true that the Rolling Stones' performance wasn't their best - you can see Brian Jones looking very much out of it, almost not there at moments, but they pulled off good renditions of classics from the then recent 'Beggars Banquet' album, and yet to be recorded classic 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. But it is also true that the Who blew their doors off that night, probably the biggest reason for the shelving of 'Rock and Roll Circus' for years.
