    Editorial Reviews

Ernest Hemingway's introspective novella never impressed readers as being particularly suitable for cinematic adaptation, but this 1958 version -- ably directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape) -- made an effective and oddly poignant starring vehicle for Spencer Tracy, then in the twilight of his illustrious film career. It's virtually a one-character piece, with Tracy turning in a masterful performance as an aged Cuban fisherman, weary of battling the sea and the elements but determined to win his grueling struggle with a huge marlin. Sturges extracts every iota of drama and suspense from this simple situation, his task simplified by the exquisite cinematography of James Wong Howe and the stirring, Oscar-winning musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin. But the lion's share of the kudos must go to Tracy, who imbues his character with stubbornness, strength, and dignity. His captivating portrayal of the title character makes this modest film a must-see for fans of superb screen acting. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

September 11, 2003: My father took us to drive-in movies, and this movie with all of the sea footage still stands out in my memory. It was beautiful. Spencer Tracy was superb, as usual. The movie was ''still showing'' in the '60's! I was in elementary school, and it made me cry.
