The NBC sitcom The Office was based on the British comedy series of the same name, co-created by Ricky Gervais, who in the original series had also starred as David Brent, terminally disingenuous office manager of Wernham Hogg Paper Merchants (Slough Branch). The American version top-billed Steve Carrell as Michael Scott, regional manager in a branch office of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Forever trying to put a "happy face" on office conditions where he worked, Michael was cursed with two fatal flaws: He thought he was funny and cool, and worse yet, he thought he was actually competent. Michael's employees included pompous, self-styled ladies' man Jim Halpert (John Krasinski); Jim's cubicle-mate and mortal enemy, garrulous know-it-all Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson); receptionist Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) the gorgeous, frustratingly "untouchable" object of her male coworkers' lust; and hotshot temp Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak), the only person who was savvy to all the backstabbing, short-shrifting office politics that fulminated all around him -- and wild horses couldn't make Ryan reveal what he knew! Filmed in a faux documentary style, The Office began its first season (actually a six-episode trial run) on March 24, 2005. Barnes & Noble

January 04, 2009: The Office is my #1 favorite show ever!!! Why? There are so many reasons and not enough time to list them all. For one thing, the show takes place in Scranton, PA and despite Joe Biden giving Scranton a bad rep (at least on SNL) that place is awesome. Then there are the amazingly fantastic characters played by the amazingly fantastic actors and actresses. These characters are so realistic. Everyone has an Angela in their life and a Michael and some lucky few even have a Jim. My personal favorite character is Pam played by the talented Jenna Fischer. Her facial expressions are perfect reactions to any situation. Anyway, I know this show isn't for everyone and I'm sure some would consider the comedy harsh at times. The world is harsh, though, and The Office allows you to laugh in the face of such harshness. You'll be sure to replay the episodes again and again. I know I have.

I Also Recommend: Juno, The Office and Philosophy: Scenes from the Unexamined Life.
