Editorial Reviews

Yes, The O.C. trades in the dishy goings-on of Southern California's young, beautiful, and rich, but this is no Beverly Hills, 90210 rehash. Focusing equally on the kids and their parents, this Fox drama rarely stoops to easy moralizing and features some of the smartest writing this side of Gilmore Girls. At the heart of The O.C. are the Cohens -- Sandy (Peter Gallagher), an idealistic lawyer whose wife, Kirstin (Kelly Rowan), helps run her morally challenged father's lucrative real estate business in tony Newport Beach. In the pilot, Sandy brings his pro bono work home with him in the form of Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a smart but troubled kid from Chino who's one step from the juvenile detention center. The Cohens' only son, Seth (Adam Brody), immediately sees Ryan as the brother he never had. Geeky, obsessed with comic books and indie rock, Seth is just as much an outsider in Newport as Ryan, and the two soon form a tight bond. The Cohens' next-door neighbors are the Coopers: Jimmy (Tate Donovan), the community financial adviser, who may be in trouble with the SEC; his bitchy, upwardly mobile wife, Julie (Melinda Clarke); and their daughter, Marissa (Mischa Barton), who instantly sparks with Ryan. This doesn't sit well with Marissa's jock boyfriend, Luke (Chris Carmack), who ends up brawling with Ryan repeatedly. Meanwhile, Seth pines after Marissa's best friend, Summer (Rachel Bilson), and the arrival of transfer student Anna (Samaire Armstrong) eventually helps turn this into a love triangle. The first season has plenty of melodrama -- fights, stalkers, gay dads, more fights, a May-December romance, alcoholism, strippers, and still more fights -- but The O.C. is at its best when it's not sudsy. Seth Cohen may be the most likable male teenager since Say Anything's Lloyd Dobler, and his relationship with his parents provides some of the show's heartfelt moments and biggest laughs. Holiday-themed episodes such as "The Homecoming," "The Best Chrismukkah Ever," and "The Heartbreak" are especially charming, but Season 1's showstopper, "The Strip," involves a hedonistic trip to Las Vegas that effortlessly melds the show's trashy and tender sides. Despite its flash, The O.C.'s empathetic characters and situations are what made it a success. That, and all the fights. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble

July 20, 2007: i tried watching the o.c when they rerun it from the first season after one tree hill on soap net. but after watching half of season one it got a little boring to me. people made such a big deal out of this show so i thought it must be good. people should make a big deal about one tree hill. chad micheal murray and james lafferty are so much cuter than ben mackenzie and that adam guy who plays seth. i guess it probaly would have gotten intresting if i had countinued watching it.

June 07, 2006: The OC is my favorite show in the world and the first season is the best. I can totally relate to some of the things that happen and the characters are all so interesting, and it doesn't help that the guys are soooo hot! Everyone should watch this show!
