Editorial Reviews

You'd think that being rich, young, and beautiful would be enough. But in the glamorous world of The O.C., life is never that simple. If anything, things get more turbulent in the Fox soap's third season. In Seth, Ryan, Summer, and Marissa's senior year, what should be a victory lap for them is anything but. Harbor Prep's weasely new Dean (Eric Mabius, in a performance dialed just below Snidely Whiplash on the evil scale) has it in for Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie), and with the help of conniving student Taylor Townsend (Autumn Reeser), gets the two kicked out, forcing them to attend -- gasp! -- public school. There they are shunned by nearly everyone except for a sweet surfer, Johnny (Ryan Donowho), whose crush on Marissa doesn't sit well with congenitally jealous Ryan. Meanwhile, Seth (Adam Brody) sees his dream of attending Brown go up in smoke, and Summer (Rachel Bilson) gets serious about her college plans. Stirring the pot even more are Volchok (Cam Gigandet), a bad boy hell-bent on destruction who pushes Marissa's buttons, and little Kaitlin Cooper (Willa Holland), returning from private school all grown up. The parents don't have it any easier: Sandy (Peter Gallagher) hires a new protégé that leads the Newport Group into unethical waters; and Julie Cooper (Melinda Clarke) opens a dating service with Seth's mom (Kelly Rowan), and starts dating Summer's Father (Michael Nouri). Despite the Sturm und Drang, the series' signature light touch and witty dialogue keeps things from going overboard. Graduation ends Season 3 on a mostly happy note...till a shocking event rocks The O.C. into uncharted territories. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble

January 25, 2007: First let me start off by saying that I am completely obsessed with The OC. All in all, it is an amazing show: Smart, witty dialogue, great characters, tense situations and plotlines. Season 3 picks up months after the incident that ended season 2 [Marissa shooting Trey, her boyfriend Ryan's brother]. In the first episode of season 3, entitled "The Aftermath", Summer, Seth, Ryan and Marissa vow to ensure that this is the "best year ever". It's senior year, after all. The season starts out really great, but becomes frustrating after only a few episodes. The characters are so out-of-character it is unbelievable. The storylines are ratings-driven and repetitive. Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. I can't say it enough. However, the show returns to season 1 greatness in time for the final few episodes of the season. The last episode is heartwrenching - it's time for the characters we've loved for the past three years to graduate. But one of them won't survive the night. Such a heartbreaking final scene - I'm still not over her death! Overall, Season 3 of The OC was pretty good. The return of Kaitlin Cooper, the Newport Group stealing Sandy's soul, and the "Free Marissa" campaign. Even amidst the mediocre episodes, there were some great moments. I mean, who wouldn't want to see the fabulous Julie Cooper living in a trailer?! Oh, and be sure to see season 1 if you haven't already!
