Editorial Reviews

Director Peter Brook collaborates with writer Jean-Claude Carriére for this screen adaptation of the epic, 100,000-stanza Sanskrit poem tracing mankind's quest for universal truth as explored through the ongoing conflict between two warring families - the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Originally a nine-hour stage production, the lengthy play was pared down to just over five hours for the screen. Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Absolutely wonderful film, but beware--this is the trunctated TV versionby Anonymous

February 11, 2009: This is a wonderful work of art by Peter Brook, but this particular DVD edition is the trunctated 3-hour TV version, NOT the full-length, 6-hour version originally released on DVD in, I believe, 2002. Beware! One star for the reissue, five stars for the film, three stars as the average.

May 24, 2003: A deeply powerful story, filmed with hypnotic beauty and poetry, while leaving the solomnly trippy plot largely intact: includes complicated marriages, a woman whose mother is a fish, infinite lengths of yellow silk, demons, giants, ultimate weapons, involuntary sex changes, a talking lake, a dog who is also a god, and other miracles. This might be a good one for anime fans who want to branch out.
