In this elaborately mounted seafaring adventure, Rolfe (Richard Widmark) is a Viking leader with the cunning and devious mind of a pirate. Rolfe tells others sailors of "The Mother of Voices," a mammoth bell made of gold and as tall as three men, but he adds enough incorrect details to throw them off the proper trail. However, Aly Mansuh (Sidney Poitier), the leader of a group of ambitious Moors, sees through Rolfe's story, and soon the two are in a breakneck race to be the first to capture the precious bell. June 30, 2009: In the 60's this was a classic action-pack adventure. While the plot is predictable the acting by Sidney Poitier & Richard Widmark was very good. Oscar Homolka gave a solid performance as the disgruntled father of a wayward Widmark. A little romance, a few battles, a shipwreck or two and a treasure make for a great rainy day watch with the kids. Violence & nudity are minimal and don't recall any foul language. After all this was the 60's. Pass the popcorn!!!

June 23, 2003: Why is it that this and other titles are only published in the NTSC format and NOT in PAL or SECAM??? What are the studio's up to? and why can't I find anyone to ask??? I'd buy The Long Ships if it was available in PAL but.....
