Richard Matheson adapted the screenplay of The Legend of Hell House from his own novel. In the tradition of Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House, four people with alleged extrasensory powers are called upon to spend a weekend in a supposedly haunted house, to either prove or disprove the presence of ghosts. Roddy McDowall has been in the house before, and refuses to treat the possibility of paranormal activity lightly; scientist Clive Revill believes that he can trace the happenings to rational explanations involving electric current; Pamela Franklin is convinced that, if spirits exists, she will be able to communicate with them; and Gayle Hunnicutt plays Revill's young wife, ripe for "possession." April 14, 2007: Let me preface this by saying that I didn't read the book first! I am an avid reader, and I know how that can affect your opinion of any movie. But I did find this movie creepy and moody, with the right blend of shocks. Clive Rivell is trying to use technology to get at the heart of a house haunting, but he's smart enough to take along some folks who can figure out the real problems. Watching their terror as the things evolve is fun. I love Roddy McDowell in creepy movies. Probably the only person without a real purpose is Gale Hunnicutt and her role, whatever that was. Perfect movie for a rainy day, with a bowl of popcorn. It just doesn't have the same effect on a sunny day. I'm happy to get it at this special sale price.
