Editorial Reviews

The Sapphic saga continues with Season 2 of Showtime's hit The L Word. After the damaging effects of Bette's (Jennifer Beals) affair became apparent to her partner, Tina (Laurel Holloman), at the end of last season, this year starts on a painful note: Tina decides to hide her pregnancy. The on-again, off-again relationship between the two drive the season, and when Tina moves on with Helena (Rachel Shelley), Bette comes to the realization that she's close to losing someone important in her life. Also affecting Bette this season is the illness (and subsequent death) of her father, Melvin (the late Ossie Davis). Bette's sister Kit (Pam Grier) wants to keep the coffee bar The Planet open but can't come up with the down payment and thinks about going into partnership with her cross-dressing girlfriend, Ivan (Kelly Lynch). Alice (Leisha Hailey) continues to be confused by her attraction to Dana (Erin Daniels), with whom she shared her true feelings at the end of Season 1, convincing her to not get married. Tim (Eric Mabius) tells Jenny (Mia Kirshner) that he wants a divorce, as she comes to the conclusion that she is a lesbian and starts a relationship with Carmen (Sarah Shahi), an ex-girlfriend of town vixen Shane (Katherine Moenning). After Tim leaves, Jenny moves in with Shane (making Shane jealous of her relationship with Carmen) and still struggles with her writing career, butting heads with her writing professor, Charlotte Birch (guest star Sandra Bernhard). The tumultuous Season 2 ends with Tina and Bette reconciling before the birth of their baby by emergency cesarean section; Shane telling Carmen that she loves her; and Jenny, suddenly aware that she’s repressed memories of childhood abuse, cuts herself with a razor.
