Editorial Reviews

Showtime's successful focus on gay programming shifted from the guys of Queer as Folk in 2004 and moved to the gals of The L Word, a series about lesbians living and loving in L.A. The series began, ironically enough, by introducing viewers to Jenny (Mia Kirshner), a talented writer and recent university graduate who has moved to L.A. to be with her boyfriend, Tim (Eric Mabius), a swimming coach for a local college. We soon meet Tim's neighbors, Bette (Jennifer Beals), a museum administrator, and her partner, Tina (Laurel Holloman), who have been together for seven years and are trying to have a baby. It’s an eye-opener for Jenny when Bette throws a party and invites the couple over to meet her friends: Dana (Erin Daniels), a closeted tennis star; Alice (Leisha Hailey), a sharp-witted, bisexual magazine writer; Shane (Katherine Moennig), a hairstylist who's the heartthrob of the lesbian community; Kit (Pam Grier), Bette's half sister and a struggling singer; and Marina (Karina Lombard), a beautiful café owner who finds Jenny captivating. Jenny hesitates at first, confused by the romantic attention from another woman, but her attraction to Marina is undeniable. The two begin a secret affair that, along with Bette and Tina's struggle to have a baby, dominates Season 1. In the emotional episode "Lawfully," Tim discovers Jenny and Marina in a compromising situation, leading to Tim's rejection in "L'Ennui." Bette and Tina endure ups and downs in their relationship, especially in the episodes "Lies, Lies, Lies," "Losing It," and "Liberally," which features a devastatingly cruel verbal attack on Bette from a member of the religious right. Guest-star turns include: Tammy Lynn Michaels (wife to Melissa Etheridge), who appears as Shane's stalker; Anne Archer as Alice's airhead mother; Lolita Davidovich as Marina's first girlfriend; Rosanna Arquette as one of Shane's conquests; Snoop Dogg as a rapper who films a video with Kit; and Ossie Davis as Bette and Kit's father. The L Word's impressive first season alternates between sexy and serious -- with a bit of soap-opera sensibility thrown in -- making it a truly original series that offers not just lesbian characters but three-dimensional ones as well. April 23, 2006: This series has introduced the lesbian lifestyle in a way that both incorporates, and pushes the stereotypes most commonly found on television. I was hooked from the very first episode. The audience's sexuality plays no role in this amazing series' popularity because it has included entertainment for everyone. From lesbian to heterosexual to transgender love scenes, and the femme, butch, and trans representation, the L word is a true master of social depiction. The issues brought up through this show are entirely real, and some for the first time being exposed through both sides. The art gallery dillema here in season 1 gives support to controversal artists, and bette and tina's pregnency and then lack thereof sheds light on a sentsitive issue. I would recomend this series to anyone of the appropriate age. Just simply amazing.

Great show. Not only for lesbians!!!by Anonymous

January 11, 2006: The L word is one of the bests shows I have seen, it's realistic, funny, dramatic and unexpected. I think this show is great because not only is for lesbians, it has a little bit of everything for everyone. I started watching this show because of a friend and I fell in love with it. I'm not gay, but I realy liked the script, the characters and the drama. It is well acted, Jennifer Beals and Erin Daniels are great. And the thing that I liked the most is that it's very very very funny!!! Great. Totaly recomended.
